Washington, D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair (CHC) Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement after Republicans voted for the fifth time to pass a short-term spending bill:

"For the fifth time this Congress, President Trump and Congressional Republicans have decided to govern from crisis to crisis. I cannot enable this reckless conduct by voting for yet another continuing resolution. Continuing resolutions create uncertainty in our markets, hurt our national security, and inhibit the government's ability to work for the taxpayer.

"The American people are disserved by passing partisan, irresponsible legislation that the Senate has already rejected.

"President Trump used his State of the Union Address to disparage immigrant communities, distort policy, undermine bipartisan efforts to protect Dreamers, and ignore the issues important to Hispanic communities across this nation.

 

"Since the start of his Presidency, Trump has disregarded the immense contributions of immigrant families and Dreamers. Instead he has adopted rhetoric and policies that call into question their basic dignity and place in America.

Washington, D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement in response to reports that Donald Trump attacked immigration from "shithole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries:

"The President's statement is shameful, abhorrent, unpresidential, and deserves our strongest condemnation. We must use our voices to ensure that our nation never returns to the days when ignorance, prejudice, and racism dictated our decision making.

"Our nation's strength and the American Dream stem from our immigrant roots and diversity.

"I was obligated to attend today's White House meeting so that my constituents and the millions of people that the Congressional Hispanic Caucus represents had a seat at the table as we work to enact a permanent legislative fix for Dreamers by January 19th. I am encouraged that the President assured me and the bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers in attendance that he was also committed to that goal.

Washington D.C. – In the midst of Congress' ongoing tax negotiations, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) and Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) sent a letter to Republican leadership underscoring the harm that the current tax bill will impose on Puerto Rico's already fragile and recovering economy. By taxing the Island as a foreign jurisdiction, the bill will raise production costs which will cost manufacturing jobs and the economy. Signed by fifteen additional members of the CHC, the letter urges immediate action to amend the tax bill to prioritize Puerto Rico's recovery.

"This Hispanic Heritage Month, President Trump and his administration marked the occasion by continuing to impose an anti-immigrant and un-American agenda on the nation, insulting and shaming Americans facing a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, sabotaging the health care of millions, and supporting a tax plan that is a multi-trillion dollar giveaway to the wealthiest, at the expense of middle class and working Americans. The President's irresponsible and reckless actions and policies jeopardize the hard-earned gains of the Hispanic community.
