CHC Chair Statement on Six-Month Anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s Landfall on Puerto Rico and USVI

March 20, 2018
Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement on the six-month anniversary of Hurricane Maria's landfall on Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands:
"In the six months since Hurricane Maria made landfall, we have seen the harrowing and heroic stories of everyday Americans rebuilding their lives after such a devastating natural disaster. Despite a haphazard, inadequate, and slow moving disaster response from the Trump Administration, our fellow American citizens have done all they can to bring some normalcy to their communities.
"Tens of thousands of American citizens remain without permanent shelter, water or electricity. They are counting on the federal government to direct the resources needed to not only recover, but to rebuild a more resilient infrastructure that will stand up to future disasters. With the beginning of hurricane season just months away, we are calling for a sustained investment in Puerto Rico's recovery and future.
"President Trump and his administration's failure to meet the most basic responsibility of the federal government, which is to keep Americans secure and safe is a glaring example of gross negligence. The Trump Administration has a responsibility to provide our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with the same rapid and efficient response and recovery efforts that other American disaster zones have received."
