Washington D.C. – In the midst of Congress' ongoing tax negotiations, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) and Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) sent a letter to Republican leadership underscoring the harm that the current tax bill will impose on Puerto Rico's already fragile and recovering economy. Signed by fifteen additional members of the CHC, the letter urges immediate action to amend the tax bill to prioritize Puerto Rico's recovery.

Lawmakers Call For Reversal of Administration Decision to Expose Thousands to Dangerous Deportations
November 9, 2017
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), ranking member of the Immigration Subcommittee, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) today led a letter from 58 members of the Senate and House, calling on the Trump Administration to reverse its recent decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Nicaragua and Sudan, which will remove their legal protection, tear families apart, and expose them to potential deportation to unsafe situations.
The Department of Homeland Security recently terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Nicaragua and Sudan, removing their legal protection and exposing them to deportation back to dangerous countries.

Washington D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement after the Trump Administration's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it would terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) status of 2,500 Nicaraguans living in the United States and delay a decision on the status of 57,000 Hondurans:
"The Trump Administration's irresponsible decision to end TPS for Nicaraguans will tear apart families and upend the lives of these hard-working individuals. These immigrants have lived in the United States for nearly 20 years and have raised U.S. citizen children, contributed to our economy and enriched our communities. Deporting families who are contributing to the economic and social fabric of our nation isn't leadership; it's a reckless and callous abuse of power.

Washington D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement after reports surfaced that President Trump and Senate Republicans agreed to not attach a DACA fix to the year-end spending bill:
"At stake are the lives of 800,000 young American patriots who are at the mercy of Republican backroom deals. It is reprehensible that the President and Senate Republicans would devise a scheme to hold the Dream Act hostage. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is united with Americans across the country who agree that these young American Dreamers have earned their chance to live, learn, contribute, and work in the only country that they've ever known. A clean bipartisan, bicameral Dream Act is the solution and should be taken up for a vote without delay.

Washington D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement after President Trump called on Congress to end the Diversity Visa program:
"We must take swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrator of this heinous attack to justice. But the President is exploiting a national tragedy to further his anti-immigrant agenda and once again divide our nation. The President's knee-jerk reaction is irresponsible and reckless and does not address the growing threat of home-grown terrorism. It goes against our values to hastily terminate a program that has allowed more than 1.25 million people to pursue the American dream. It is shameful to wrongfully build suspicion around people who immigrated here legally and are contributing to our country.
