Washington, D.C. — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement regarding reports of the use of chemical agents within the Delaney Hall Detention Center.
"Reports from Delaney Hall today are deeply disturbing.
Just yesterday, I conducted an oversight visit at the facility. The allegations that within hours of that visit there may have been use of chemical agents inside housing units, injuries to detained individuals, and inadequate medical response require immediate clarification and investigation.
Washington, D.C. — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) on Wednesday gained access to Delaney Hall, an immigration detention facility in Newark, NJ.
Espaillat's oversight visit came a day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents pepper sprayed advocates outside the facility. New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim (D), there to conduct oversight of the facility, was among those injured by the irritant gases.
In the last 72 hours, Reps. Rob Menendez (NJ-08), Nellie Pou (NJ-09) and Analilia Mejía (NJ-11) -- all CHC members -- as well as Rep. LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) and New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill have also visited the facility.
Washington D.C. – Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) joined leaders of Latino legacy organizations on Wednesday to oppose the Republican reconciliation plan that would squander billions of taxpayer dollars down the bottomless pit of Trump-Miller immigration enforcement.
Speaking outside the U.S. Capitol Building, CHC members and national Latino leaders highlighted the dangers of runaway immigration enforcement spending and the opportunity cost for real American priorities.
Washington, D.C. — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais.
"Today's Supreme Court decision targets the heart of our democracy. It's the latest step in a multi-decade effort to erase the progress that culminated in the Voting Rights Act.
It's a painful reminder of the power yielded by those willing to sidestep the will of the people – to go outside the political process to rewrite laws passed by Congress.
This decision makes it easier for those bad faith actors to sideline and erase Black and Latino communities.
