WASHINGTON — Today, December 22nd, 2020, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Joaquin Castro (TX-20) and Chair-elect Raul Ruiz (CA-36) released the following joint statement on the selection of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla as California's next U.S. Senator:

"The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is proud to welcome Alex Padilla to Congress and the CHC — the first Latino United States Senator from California. Despite Latinos comprising over 40-percent of the state's population, Californians have never been represented by a Latino in the U.S. Senate. This historic appointment represents a new milestone in the generational struggle for Latino inclusion in the American Dream.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, November 24, 2020, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Joaquin Castro and democratic lawmakers sent a letter to Chad F. Wolf to express grave concerns for the neglect of children detained at the U.S. southern border. The Department of Homeland Security continues to disregard federal law, agency standards, and the Flores Settlement Agreement by holding children in CBP custody for extended periods.

"A dedicated public servant and Cuban immigrant, Alejandro Mayorkas is a fantastic choice to lead the Department of Homeland Security. After the cruelty and devastation wrought by the Trump administration, Mayorkas has a mandate to overhaul DHS. As the former Deputy Secretary of DHS and lead implementor of DACA, he has the necessary experience to bring about much needed reforms.
