(Washington, DC) – Today, the Congressional Tri-Caucus—comprised of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus— released the following statement on the 100th Day of the 112th Congress without a jobs bill:
“Today marks the 100th day of in the 112th Congress, which means 100 days for the House of Representatives under Republican Leadership,” said Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “As the Congressional Black Caucus prepares to present our Fiscal Year 2012 Alternative Budget, the Republican Leadership has yet to offer one jobs bill or any solutions for job creation. Instead they continue to offer draconian cuts that will critically wound and significantly impact vulnerable communities.

Gonzalez, Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Ranking Member of the House Administration’s Subcommittee on Elections, which oversees election administration and voter identification issues, released the following statement regarding today’s hearing to terminate the Election Assistance Commission:
“There are few things more important in our country, and more deserving of our support, than ensuring that every American citizen’s right to vote is protected. The Election Assistance Commission, created under the Help America Vote Act is an independent bipartisan commission charged with developing guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopting voluntary voting system guidelines and serving as a national clearinghouse of information on election administration.

“The President is absolutely right: reducing our deficit is a shared responsibility. The balanced approach he described to tackle our economic future is not only fiscally responsible, but morally right. Deficit reduction should not increase poverty or inequality by violating the basic principles of fairness which we have a responsibility to uphold.

(Washington, DC)- The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) applauds the 9th Circuit Court of appeals for upholding Judge Susan Bolton’s decision to enjoin Arizona from enforcing the most concerning provisions of the Arizona S.B. 1070. Specifically, the Ninth Circuit Court upheld Judge Susan Bolton’s ruling which, by injunction, prohibits Arizona from: requiring police officers to ask for proof of legal status while making arrests or detaining a person for questioning; making the failure to apply for or carry alien registration papers, a state crime; making it a crime for an undocumented immigrant to solicit, apply, or perform work; and authorizing the warrantless arrest of a person when there is probable cause to believe that person had committed a public offense punishable by deportation.

“As the Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I’m particularly concerned about how devastating a government shutdown would be to our most vulnerable communities,” said Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez. “Over 800,000 military personnel and federal workers would be impacted should the Republicans force a shut down. Over 1 million students enrolled in work-study and receiving federal financial aid, wouldn’t receive the assistance they need to continue their education should Republicans force a shut down tonight.

(Washington, DC) Today, the Senate confirmed Jimmie V. Reyna as United States Circuit Judge for the Federal Circuit. Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, issued the following statement:
“The CHC wishes to congratulate Jimmie V. Reyna on becoming the first Hispanic to become a United States Circuit Judge for the Federal Circuit. Judge Reyna brings extraordinary professional experience to the bench. As an internal trade attorney in Washington DC, he became an expert on laws, regulations and governmental measures involved in cross-border movement of goods and services. He also brings considerable experience with business regulation matters including export controls, customs, trade in services, rules of origin, customs audits/compliance, produce standards and homeland and border security.

(Washington, D.C.) –Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus issued the following statement in response to House Republican Leader Eric Cantor’s comments to National Public Radio. Cantor, while discussing Social Security, said: “We’re going to have to come to grips with the fact that these programs cannot exist if we want America to be what we want it to be.”:
“What Representative Cantor has to come to grips with is that America is what it is because of, not in spite of, programs such as Social Security. Social Security provides much needed financial support to retirees, survivors of deceased workers, and workers who become disabled, as well as members of their families.
