SAN ANTONIO: Today, Chairman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX 20) released a letter to express the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’s continued appreciation to Latino and immigrant activists and supporters. The open letter was written to recognize the outstanding work being done at the state, local and community level fighting for inclusive policies and fighting against divisive measures -- sponsored mostly by Republicans -- in state and local governments across the country. It reads, in part:

San Antonio, TX – Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX – 20) released the following statement today marking the 45th anniversary of the implementation of Medicare.

President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965, and it was enacted on July 1, 1966, when enrollees first entered the program.

“Creating Medicare has been one of our nation’s proudest achievements and today, we celebrate its delivered promise to 47 million seniors, children and people with disabilities.

“Medicare provides affordable and reliable health care coverage to 3.7 million Hispanics. But it is more than comprehensive health coverage—for many in the Hispanic community it is a lifeline and a foundational key to their health care security.

Washington, D.C.- Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Elections Subcommittee Ranking Member and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Charles A. Gonzalez, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Emanuel Cleaver today denounced Republican efforts to terminate the Election Assistance Commission, the agency Congress created in the wake of the debacle in Florida during the 2000 Presidential Election. The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) was created by the Help America Vote Act, which Whip Hoyer was the lead co-sponsor of in the House. The bill is being debated in the House tonight and will be voted on tomorrow.

San Antonio, TX - Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, issued the following statement today calling on the Senate to confirm Professor Goodwin Liu, President Obama’s nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit:

“The CHC is proud to support Professor Goodwin Liu’s nomination as a federal judge to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor Liu would bring an incredible wealth of experience and knowledge to the bench as well as fill a critical seat that has been vacated for too long. It is difficult to understand why the confirmation of such an undoubtedly qualified nominee to fill a federal judgeship would take over a year. We urge the Senate to act in a timely manner on this nomination as well as all of the President’s remaining nominees."

“Today marks the 100th day of in the 112th Congress, which means 100 days for the House of Representatives under Republican Leadership,” said Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. “As the Congressional Black Caucus prepares to present our Fiscal Year 2012 Alternative Budget, the Republican Leadership has yet to offer one jobs bill or any solutions for job creation. Instead they continue to offer draconian cuts that will critically wound and significantly impact vulnerable communities.

The Election Assistance Commission, created under the Help America Vote Act is an independent bipartisan commission charged with developing guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopting voluntary voting system guidelines and serving as a national clearinghouse of information on election administration.
