Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Members released the following statements on the Supreme Court’s 8-0 decision rejecting the one-person, one-vote rule. In the ruling, the Supreme Court determined that voting districts should continue to be drawn using census population data, and not changed to count only eligible-voting citizens.
In December, CHC Members issued statements and spoke out on the devastating effects the case would have on the Latino community.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus sent a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady and Ranking Member Sander Levin urging them to oppose H.R. 4722, legislation that would require a Social Security number to claim the Child Tax Credit.

Linda Sánchez Statement on Republican Anti-Immigrant Amicus Brief Resolution
Washington, DC – Representative Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a member of the Ways and Means Committee, today made the following statement for the record on H. Res. 639, the House Republican resolution to undo President Obama’s Executive Action on immigration:
Mister Speaker,
I rise today in opposition to H. Res. 639, a misguided resolution forced on all members of the House of Representatives in an attempt to block President Obama’s execution action on immigration. This is yet another partisan effort by House Republicans to tear families apart and separate children from their parents.
Washington, DC- Representative Linda Sánchez (CA-38), Chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, today released the following statement on the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit Judge Merrick Garland to the United States Supreme Court:
“President Obama has fulfilled his constitutional obligation by nominating Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court of the United States. It is now time for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional responsibility and consider the president’s nominee. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus urges swift and thoughtful consideration of Chief Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination.
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Members met with Secretary Tom Vilsack of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The meeting was held on Capitol Hill at the request of the Caucus. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has enormous implications for the Latino community, including its administration of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), as well as the National School Lunch Program. For example, children of color are the largest demographic served by the National School Lunch Program, with 77% of Latino students eligible to participate in the free/reduced price lunch program.
Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) released the following statements condemning Speaker Paul Ryan’s announcement that House Republicans will force a vote on a resolution authorizing the filing of a legal brief that supports halting the President’s immigration executive actions. The Supreme Court is hearing United States v. Texas this term and by filing the brief, Republicans want to block the immigration executive actions from taking effect.
The statements come from the CHC’s Immigration Task Force Co-Chairs, Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez and Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.

The healthcare situation in Puerto Rico has continued to deteriorate with hospital closures looming due to lack of funds, extreme wait times for patients to receive life-saving care, and doctors continuing to leave for better opportunities stateside. Congress needs to take immediate action to address Puerto Rico’s healthcare inequities, which are a key component of the Island’s growing unsustainable fiscal and humanitarian crisis.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and New York Congressman Jose Serrano gave brief remarks in support of solutions to the Island’s healthcare inequities.
Puerto Rico’s deteriorating fiscal situation has taken a toll on delivery of care to the Island’s neediest patients with a growing doctor shortage and life-threatening wait times for specialty services. Several hospitals are preparing for closure due to lack of funds and delayed payments for providers. Today’s briefing urged members of Congress to take action to address the growing healthcare crisis and allow Puerto Ricans to receive the care they desperately need.
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Linda T. Sánchez and First Vice Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham marked the seventh anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The Act allows women to challenge pay discrimination in court.
Last October, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Joint Economic Committee released a report on the economic state of the Latino community. According to the report:
· There are over 27 million Latinas in the United States, including 18.6 million Latinas who are 18 years or older.
· Latinas account for 7 percent of the total workforce and 15 percent of the female workforce.
· Latinas earn 55 cents for every dollar earned by a non-Hispanic white man.
