Washington, DC – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued the following statement following a Congressional Hispanic Caucus meeting with Linda McMahon, the Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
"Today's meeting with Administrator McMahon gave our Members the opportunity to discuss how important Hispanic small businesses and entrepreneurs are to growing the economy. More importantly, we discussed the barriers our constituents face when attempting to access critical SBA programs and small business loans. In fact, less than a quarter of Hispanic-owned small businesses have heard of the SBA and only about 8 percent of SBA loans are awarded to Hispanics.

Washington, DC – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement in reaction to President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court:
"President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh would be a serious setback for equity and justice in our nation and would deeply harm immigrants and communities of color. Kavanagh's judicial record, including his D.C. Circuit decision to limit a young undocumented woman's right to choose, demonstrates that he would lend strong support to Trump's anti-immigrant agenda.
"In the months ahead, the Supreme Court will decide the constitutionality and legality of President Trump's many cruel and reckless immigration policies.

Washington, DC – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus urges the House to oppose the ‘‘Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018'':
This bill would hold Dreamer protections hostage for Trump's purely political and wasteful $25 billion border wall. It would further militarize the border and make devastating changes to the Flores Agreement, which would legislate the policies that are currently separating families at the border by making it more difficult for asylum seekers to legally claim asylum, and make it easier to deport children and jail asylum seekers indefinitely.

Washington, DC – 12 Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), led by Representatives Nydia M. Velázquez (NY-07), Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) and Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) sent a letter to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson to highlight concerns with the department's plan to significantly increase rent and work requirements for millions of low income families who rely on federal housing assistance. Nearly 20 percent of all households living in public housing or receiving Housing Choice Vouchers identify as Latino.

Washington, DC – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) issued this statement on findings from a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and other institutions that estimated 4,645 excess deaths as a result of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico:
"The new mortality study showing that the death toll from Hurricane Maria is roughly 70 times higher than the Trump administration's official death toll is appalling and disturbing.

"On Memorial Day, we remember and honor fallen heroes like Marine Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez, a Guatemalan immigrant and one of the first servicemembers killed while serving in Iraq in 2003, who gave their lives to uphold and preserve our nation's principles and values.
"Memorial Day is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions of immigrant servicemembers to the fabric of our nation and their deeds, bravery and courage in the field of battle. Immigrants founded this country and have fought and died in every war in American history.

Washington, DC – 21 Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), led by Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) and CHC Civil Rights Task Force Chair Representative Darren Soto (FL-09), sent a letter to Secretary Wilbur Ross outlining their concerns with proposed changes to the 2020 census. The inclusion of a citizenship question, as well as, unresolved issues from the 2010 Census jeopardizing the accuracy of the 2020 Census, potentially taking billions of dollars in federal funds and accurate congressional representation from communities across the country.

Washington, D.C. – The Leadership of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Small Business Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez requested a meeting with U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Linda McMahon to discuss ways of working together to increase support for and create marketplace opportunities for minority-owned businesses.
"The Congressional Hispanic Caucus remains deeply concerned about the SBA's efforts to provide Hispanic-owned businesses with federal resources that are fundamental to improving the quality and scale of their business activities," the Members wrote.
