FULL REMARKS

Hello, I'm Linda Sánchez, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

This Earth Day is an opportunity for us to think about our impact on the environment.

In the Latino community, many of us are already strong environmentalists. Our padres y abuelitos taught us to be resourceful and not be wasteful. They've taught us to recycle grocery bags and to reuse containers. To grow herbs and vegetables in our backyard for the meals we cook.

Washington, D.C. – CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez and the CHC Civil Rights Task Force released the following statements on the need to confirm Loretta Lynch to be the next U.S. Attorney General of the United States.

CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez (CA-38): "Loretta Lynch's confirmation is long overdue. Her confirmation has been unjustly stalled for five months because of her views on the President's immigration executive actions – actions that are critically important to the Latino community and that are removed from her qualifications to serve as Attorney General. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus looks forward to seeing her swift Senate confirmation and to having an ally that will champion civil rights and justice issues."

Washington, DC- Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following statement today following news that Senator Harry Reid will not seek another term in Congress.

"Senator Harry Reid has been one of the fiercest champions for the Latino community in the upper chamber. From championing the DREAM Act to comprehensive immigration reform and countless other Latino priorities, Senator Reid has always fought for America's working families. During his tenure, Senator Reid empowered the Latino community to be a strong voice in Nevada. Though the state will lose a much beloved Senator, we know that the Latino community will continue playing an important role. We thank the Senator and his family for 30 years of service in Congress and look forward to continuing to see the growing role Latinos in Nevada will play."

Washington, D.C. – CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following statement on the seven-day Continuing Resolution (CR) for the Department of Homeland Security.

"House Republicans are unbelievable. With two hours left before a Department of Homeland Security shutdown, House Republicans left no option but to do another short-term funding bill. This is no way to govern and in just seven days, we will have to do this all over again. Our country's national security is at stake here and it is critical that the Department's operations are not disrupted."

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) adopted a set of education principles for the 114th Congress. Tomorrow, the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives will take a final vote on H.R. 5, legislation that would reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

"Latino students deserve a quality education and these principles define where the Congressional Hispanic Caucus stands on education. Our Caucus has been strong on education. In fact, many of us would not be where we are without our education. ESEA was signed into law in 1965 as a civil rights bill and now more than ever needs to be strengthened. We believe all students in our country, including Latino and English Language Learners, deserve a quality education from the early learning stages through the high school years," said CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez.

Washington, D.C. – CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez released the following statement on the White House's announcement that it will be moving forward to seek a stay of the district court's preliminary injunction order.

"The White House's decision to move forward in seeking a stay of the district court's preliminary injunction order is the right thing to do. There are millions of DACA and DAPA eligible individuals who cannot continue living in the shadows and are ready to sign up for the President's immigration executive actions. Let us remember that the reason we are in this situation is because House Republicans continue to obstruct all action on comprehensive immigration reform."
