CHC Chair Statement on Cinco de Mayo

May 4, 2018
Washington D.C. — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement on Cinco de Mayo:
"This American holiday represents more than just a single victory in battle. Today we honor the rich contributions made by Mexican-Americans to our nation's culture, society, and history and we recommit to the forward progress of the Hispanic community, whose culture, arts, heritage and history we celebrate."
"Since last year's Cinco De Mayo, the Trump Administration has continued its relentless attacks on Hispanic families. From going after DACA and TPS, to perpetuating irrational and harmful anti-immigration policies and rhetoric, this Administration's words and actions have made clear just how little regard they have for Hispanic Americans and immigrant families. Further, our communities have shouldered the weight of President Trump's reckless legislative agenda that has limited access to affordable healthcare, rolled back environmental protections detrimental to the health and safety of children and families and put the tax needs of the few ultra-wealthy and privileged ahead of the rest of the nation.
"As we continue to work for justice, we recognize that our community still embodies the courage, resilience and perseverance that led to the victory at the battle of Puebla that we commemorate today."
