WASHINGTON — Today, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin held a press conference with plaintiffs in the DACA case before the Supreme Court to call on the Trump Administration to reverse their baseless termination of the DACA program and demand that the Republican controlled Senate to pass H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act. Below are remarks as delivered by Congressman Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus:

WASHINGTON—– On Tuesday November 12th, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, faith leaders, and civil rights leaders come together with DACA recipients for a moment of reflection on what is at stake for DACA recipients, their family, and the nation in anticipation of the Supreme Court hearings later that morning.

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. in the Rayburn Room of the U.S. Capitol, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Assistant Speaker of the House Ben Ray Luján (D-NM-3), Dream and Promise Act Author Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA-40), and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will join plaintiffs in the upcoming DACA case before the U.S. Supreme Court and immigration advocates to call on the Trump administration to reverse their baseless termination of DACA and the Republican controlled Senate to pass legislation that would offer a permanent legislative path to citizenship for Dreamers.

WASHINGTON — On Thursday, November 7 and Friday, November 8, 2019, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) will lead a congressional delegation to Los Angeles, California to meet with studio executives, Hollywood diversity influencers, and stakeholders to discuss the lack of diversity and negative, unrealistic portrayal and stereotyping of Latinos in the American television and film industry. The CHC’s delegation will bring together those who have the power to change the industry, from the grassroots to the C-suite, in order to improve Latino representation. This fact-finding trip will help expose challenges facing Latinos in the entertainment industry; highlight ongoing efforts by stakeholders and the industry to address the under-representation and misrepresentation of Latinos and help identify potential policy changes to tackle systemic barriers confronting Latinos in Hollywood.

WASHINGTON— Today, members of the Congressional Tri-Caucus – which is comprised of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) – and the Congressional Census Caucus - sent a letter to House Leadership and appropriators urging them to ensure the United States Census Bureau receives robust funding in the next spending package to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 Census. The letter, led by Tri-Caucus Chairs Rep. Judy Chu (CAPAC), Rep. Karen Bass (CBC), and Rep. Joaquin Castro (CHC) and Census Caucus Co-chair Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney and signed by a total of 87 Members of Congress, requests “a full year allocation that at minimum matches the Senate Committee on Appropriations approved amount of $7.284 billion for Periodic Censuses and Programs, including $6.696 billion for the 2020 Census, and that ideally is closer to the House approved levels of $8.175 billion and $7.5 billion, respectively.” This funding should be in addition to the $1.02 billion that will be carried over from FY 2019 to FY 2020.

WASHINGTON— Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Committee Chairs and the New Mexico Delegation called on the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General to launch an investigation into the actions of Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) with regard to the treatment of Roxsana Hernandez and ICE’s failure to preserve video evidence that may have been crucial to her family seeking justice. Roxsana, a trans woman from Honduras, died just weeks after arriving in the United States, possibly due to the inadequate medical care provided to her while in ICE custody.

WASHINGTON — This morning, the US Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) released a report on the treatment of immigrant families in US custody entitled “Trauma at the Border: The Human Cost of Inhumane Immigration Policies.” This 200-page report reveals the depths of atrocities committed against vulnerable immigrants by the Trump Administration and includes personal testimonies from asylum seekers, legal experts, and witnesses of the impacts of changing immigration policy at the US-Mexico border. This recent report has similar findings to previous government and watchdog reports, such as the September report by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Inspector General on the mental health impacts of family separation and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General July report on the overcrowding and substandard immigration detention conditions.

She is the first staff member to serve in this role at the CHC and will oversee the Caucus' policy work on diversity issues, healthcare, Census 2020, and other vital policy areas.
