Members of Congress Lead Immigration Court Visit as Part of CHC Month of Action
New York, NY — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), along with Reps. Nydia Velázquez (NY-07) and Dan Goldman (NY-10), visited the immigration courts at 26 Federal Plaza today as part of the CHC’s month of action exposing ongoing due process failures in the nation’s immigration court system. The group observed proceedings, met with legal service providers, and heard directly from advocates supporting families navigating the courts. Immediately after the court observations, the delegation held a press conference to share their findings and outline next steps.
As part of today's action, Members also announced the introduction of the Immigration Court Due Process Protection Act. The legislation protects individuals attending court or ICE appointments by preventing the Department of Homeland Security from using those spaces as trap points. It requires a judicial warrant for arrests, senior-level authorization, and Inspector General reporting, while strengthening congressional oversight to stop abuses and ensure families with active cases can appear without fear.
The visit was supported by local partners including the New York Immigration Coalition, New Sanctuary Coalition, St. Peter’s Church, The Door, NYLAG, ACLU NY, and the Vera Institute, along with directly impacted community members.

Miembros del Congreso visitan corte de inmigración como parte del mes de acción del CHC
Nueva York, NY — El Presidente del Caucus Hispano del Congreso Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), junto con los representantes Nydia Velázquez (NY-07) y Dan Goldman (NY-10), visitó las cortes migratorias en 26 Federal Plaza hoy como parte del mes de acción del CHC para exponer las continuas fallas del debido proceso en el sistema de cortes de inmigración de nuestra nación. El grupo observó los procesos, se encontró con proveedores de servicios legales, y escuchó directamente a los defensores que apoyan a las familias que intentan navegar las cortes. Inmediatamente después de las visitas, la delegación sostuvo una conferencia de prensa para compartir lo que encontraron y para delimitar nuevas acciones.
Como parte de la acción de hoy, los miembros anunciaron la presentación del Immigration Court Due Process Protection Act. Esta legislación protege a las personas que asisten a la corte o a citas programadas con ICE evitando que el Departamento de Seguridad Interior (DHS por sus siglas en inglés) utilize esos espacios como trampas. Requiere una orden judicial para ejecutar arrestos, autorización por parte de oficiales de alto rango, y supervisión por parte de los órganos internos de investigación, mientras que también fortalece la supervisión legislativa para detener abusos y asegurar que las familias con casos activos puedan presentarse sin miedo.
