Congressional Hispanic Caucus Statement on Confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security
WASHINGTON—Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Mayorkas will be the first immigrant and first Hispanic to lead the department. Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) released the following statement in reaction to his confirmation:
“We applaud the historic confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as the first immigrant and Hispanic to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).” said Chairman Ruiz. “Throughout his distinguished career in public service, Mr. Mayorkas safeguarded the integrity of our immigration system and worked to keep our nation safe. We are confident he will be effective, fair, and restore professionalism and humanity in our immigration system. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus looks forward to working closely with Mr. Mayorkas to correct the inhumane and cruel policies and behavior from the previous administration, fix our broken immigration system, and uphold our American values of professionalism, fairness, and humanity.”
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), founded in December 1976, is organized as a Congressional Member organization, governed under the Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives. The CHC is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Hispanics in the United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. Territories.
