Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman on Importance of Immigration Reform to our Economy

October 17, 2013

Washington D.C.: Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement at the conclusion of President Barack Obama's remarks on the reopening of the federal government:

"I commend President Barack Obama for including immigration reform as one of the three things the Congress must tackle before the end of the year. There is broad support for immigration in the Congress as was evident with Senate passage of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) in June. It is now time for the House to act. Passage of a commonsense bill like S. 744 will reduce the federal budget deficit by nearly $850 billion and increase economic growth by more than $1 trillion over the next 20 years.

"Throughout this Congress the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has worked to develop a bipartisan and comprehensive immigration reform bill. Today more than 180 Members have endorsed HR 15 in the House and many more have voiced their support for immigration reform. We, once again, call on Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor to give us a vote."

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), founded in December 1976, is organized as a Congressional Member organization, governed under the Rules of the U.S. House of Representatives. The CHC is dedicated to voicing and advancing, through the legislative process, issues affecting Hispanics in the United States, Puerto
Rico and U.S. Territories.
