CHC URGES LORETTA LYNCH CONFIRMATION

April 22, 2015

Washington, D.C. – CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez and the CHC Civil Rights Task Force released the following statements on the need to confirm Loretta Lynch to be the next U.S. Attorney General of the United States.

CHC Chairwoman Linda Sánchez (CA-38): "Loretta Lynch's confirmation is long overdue. Her confirmation has been unjustly stalled for five months because of her views on the President's immigration executive actions – actions that are critically important to the Latino community and that are removed from her qualifications to serve as Attorney General. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus looks forward to seeing her swift Senate confirmation and to having an ally that will champion civil rights and justice issues."

CHC Civil Rights Task Force Co-Chair José Serrano (NY-15): "It is long past time for Loretta Lynch to be confirmed as our nation's next Attorney General. She is highly qualified for the position, and her previous experience as a prosecutor, and in the private sector, will serve her well in ensuring that our nation's laws are fairly enforced and that all groups are protected under the law. She earned respect from across the political spectrum for her work as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and I expect her success there to be replicated nationally. Our nation is facing serious challenges in civil rights, domestic security, and numerous other areas- it is time to quickly confirm Ms. Lynch, and to allow her to get to work."

CHC Civil Rights Task Force Co-Chair Norma Torres (CA-35): "The nomination of Loretta Lynch should be considered on its own merits. In addition to holding two Harvard degrees and serving as federal prosecutor in one of this country's most challenging districts, Loretta Lynch has built strong relationships across both the law enforcement and civil rights communities, and her experience has been praised by Republicans and Democrats alike. I urge her swift confirmation so that she can get on with the important work of defending the rights of the American public, which I have no doubt she will do admirably."

CHC Civil Rights Task Force Member Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40): "Loretta Lynch is impeccably qualified to be Attorney General. I am confident she would fairly interpret our nation's laws, preserve our civil rights, and protect us from threats to our well-being. That is why I am saddened that Senate Republicans insisted on using her nomination as a bargaining chip on an unrelated bill, and forced her to wait longer for a confirmation vote than the last seven Attorneys General combined. I look forward to the Senate holding a vote on Ms. Lynch's nomination, and confirming her as the next Attorney General of the United States."
