Washington, D.C. - The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement after President Trump threatened to shut down government if Congress does not spend billions of taxpayer dollars to begin construction of his border wall:
"It is shameful that this far into his Presidency, Mr. Trump continues to grow the divisions that he sowed during his campaign. Instead of using his platform to support a reasonable path forward on immigration reform, the economy and the budget, the President chose to push his divisive, nativist agenda. He continued his attacks on immigrant communities and recklessly threatened to shut down the government if Congress refuses to allocate billions of taxpayer funds to pay for his unnecessary and ineffective border wall. This type of brinkmanship is irresponsible. It is critical for Congress to step up and work to address the concerns of the American public, including creating jobs, raising wages and reforming our immigration system."
