CHC Chair Statement on Attending the Ninth Summit of the Americas

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36), will attend the Ninth Summit of the Americas hosted by the President of the United States as a member of the Congressional Delegation led by the Speaker of the House, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. The Summit is taking place in Los Angeles, where the Delegation will participate in stakeholder forums with heads of state and other leaders from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean to advance shared goals for the Western Hemisphere.

CHC Chair Dr. Raul Ruiz released the following statement:

"As the Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I support the Summit of the Americas' goal of promoting inclusive economic growth and prosperity based on a shared respect for democratic governance and free enterprise. The Summit provides a unique opportunity to address critical issues including building up resilient health care systems, ensuring an equitable recovery from the pandemic, and addressing the root causes of migration," said Chair Dr. Ruiz. "As we work together on these issues, it is critical that we obtain commitments from Western Hemisphere leaders to protect the safety and human dignity of vulnerable populations migrating across the Americas, including children, pregnant women, the elderly, LGBTQI+, and people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. We will work with our partners in the Western Hemisphere to defend democracy and condemn autocracy."
