CHC Chair Barragán Statement on Settlement Agreement for Families Separated at U.S. Mexico Border by Trump Administration
WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán issued the following statement in response to the U.S. government reaching a settlement in a class action lawsuit filed by families who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border during the Trump administration:
“The announcement that the White House has reached a settlement agreement with families inhumanely separated at the U.S. Mexico Border by the Trump administration is welcome news,” said Chair Barragán. “Medical professionals state that children who are separated from their parents are at high risk of developing attachment issues and long-term emotional and cognitive problems. This settlement will help lessen their pain and suffering, but no settlement could ever undo the damage inflicted on these families by the previous Administration. This settlement news also sends a message that the U.S. government will not tolerate the inhumane treatment of families seeking asylum in the United States.”
“I want to thank the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for their help to make this agreement possible,” added Chair Barragán. “The CHC is grateful to the advocacy and community groups that fought for these families throughout the years. We're all together in saying that what happened during the Trump-era was wrong and should never be repeated.”
