CHC Chair Barragán Statement on Arrest of Man Traveling to Border with Guns to "Commit Acts of Violence"

February 10, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Nanette Barragán released the following statement after the FBI arrested a man with firearms who allegedly said he was traveling to the southern border to “conduct acts of violence” against migrants, federal agents, and responding law enforcement.

“The constant drumbeat of false and hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric from extremist Republican politicians has real life consequences,” said Chairwoman Barragán. “We have seen this play out with the tragic mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. I am grateful that the FBI took swift action to prevent another hate-filled act of violence.  The dangerous rhetoric and mis- and dis-information about migrants from extremist media and politicians must stop, it continues to put migrants and our Latino communities in danger.”
