CHAIR GONZALEZ TO REP. MO BROOK’S ON ALABAMA LAW

Washington D.C.: Chairman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX 20) released a response to the statements made by Rep. Mo Brooks (AL-05) in an interview with POLITICO about the Alabama immigration law’s impact on Hispanic students:

“Once again, Rep. Mo Brooks is singing the praises of a policy that is damaging both to the economy and our fundamental civil rights. When he says the absence of children from school is an intended consequence of Alabama’s legislation, I can’t help but think of the many Hispanic children who are disproportionately being targeted by this law- children who need an education so that they will grow into productive, successful adults. Failure to educate children, many of whom are citizens, is not sound policy for any state.

“This misguided law has other consequences as well, like institutionalizing profiling, forcing teachers into being law enforcement agents and hurting the farm economy. The better alternative is comprehensive immigration reform which addresses the economic needs of Alabama."
