In Their Own Words: Members of Congress and Family of Kilmar Abrego Garcia Demand His Immediate Return to the U.S. After Illegal Deportation
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Members of Congress joined Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, and immigrant advocacy leaders from CASA to demand answers and accountability from the Trump Administration for the illegal deportation and disappearance of Abrego Garcia—a Maryland father, tradesman, and legal U.S. resident who was forcibly removed to El Salvador in March despite holding lawful status.
Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Maryland delegation spoke out alongside Vasquez Sura against Abrego García's unlawful detention.
In their own words: "Kilmar, if you can hear me, I'm still fighting for you. Your brother. Your mother. Your children. They're still fighting for you. We're not gonna give up hope. To the Supreme Court justices, do the right thing. History will always remember you," said Vasquez Sura.
"I think that when you hear a mother speak about what is happening in her home with her children because her husband and the father of her children is not there, I think that moves this nation. And public sentiment in this nation, as Abraham Lincoln said -- right in the middle of the Civil War -- is everything. And so I feel that Jennifer and Jennifer's story could move mountains, not just bring him back home. I think she could move mountains," said CHC Chairman Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13).
“What has happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia should never happen in the United States of America — Kilmar was living here legally until being whisked off without any due process and is now lockedaway in a treacherous jail in El Salvador. We will fight back in the courts, we will fight back in Congress, and we will fight back in our communities against this reprehensible action. To Kilmar's family, we are with you in this fight for justice, and we demand he be returned home now,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD).
“The Trump Administration admitted that the deportation of Marylander Kilmar Abrego Garcia,which had no legal basis, was done in ‘administrative error,’ and a judge ordered them to return him to the United States by midnight this Monday. Rather than bring back the man they admitted they wrongfully deported without due process, the administration amazingly placed the attorney who argued the case on leave for telling the truth about the administration’s mistake. We're fighting in Congress to defend the Constitution and to bring Kilmar home,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (MD-08).
“It’s time for the Trump administration to put up or shut up. Bring Kilmar home for his day in court so he can clear his name and reunite with his family. Due process matters! DOJ and ICE need to prove their allegations under oath if they can. Let this father, husband and sheet metal worker get back to his life without delay,” said Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-04).
“Kilmar Abrego Garcia had a legal right to be in America. He’s a husband, father and working man – not a criminal. Yet he was deported to a gulag in El Salvador with no due process, and Presidents Trump and Bukele refuse to return him to his family in the U.S. We stood with his family yesterday to demand Kilmar’s return,” said Rep Joaquin Castro (TX-20).
“Kilmar is a working man. He was building a life here, providing for his daughter, showing up for his union. Now he’s locked in a mega-prison in El Salvador, and the U.S. is footing the bill. We are responsible, and we must take responsibility for bringing him back,” said Rep. Nydia M. Velazquez (NY-07).
“We support Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s family because we care about the Constitution, but as importantly because we believe in family reunification. We want this nightmare to end, and we want to prevent further nightmares like this from happening to others. That only happens when the Constitution is respected and when there is due process,” said Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04).
“I want to thank Kilmar’s family for being here. I want to thank you, Jennifer, in particular. And I especially want to thank you for your tears. Because I think the American people got to see the hurt of so many families in America right now. Your tears are joined with the tears of many people in my district in San Diego, and they form a stream, and throughout this country, they form a river. A river of tears because of what’s happening to families. Supposedly the Administration is the ‘family values’ Administration, and yet they’re tearing these families apart.” said Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-52).
The Trump Administration committed a horrific abuse of power when they seized Kilmar Abrego Garcia and deported him to a brutal prison in El Salvador. Abrego Garcia is a husband, a father of three, and had protected status in the United States,” said Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragán (CA-44).
“The fact that the Trump Administration still deported him — in secret, without cause, without a warrant, and without due process — should terrify all of us. House Democrats will not stop fighting until he is safely back in the U.S., reunited with his family, and Donald Trump and his Administration are held accountable for what they did,” she added.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - El miércoles 9 de abril del 2025, miembros del Congreso, la esposa de Kilmar Abrego García, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, y líderes comunitarios de CASA exigieron respuestas de la administración Trump por la deportación y desaparición ilícita de Abrego García -- un padre de familia de Maryland, trabajador y residente legal quien fue removido por fuerza a El Salvador en marzo a pesar de gozar de estatus legal en los Estados Unidos.
Miembros del Caucus Hispano del Congreso (CHC por sus siglas en inglés) y la delegación de Maryland hablaron junto con Vasquez Sura sobre la detención ilícita de Abrego García. "Kilmar Abrego García tenía el derecho legal de estar en América. Es un esposo, padre, y hombre de trabajo -- no un criminal. Sin embargo fue deportado a un gulag en El Salbvador sin debido proceso, y los Presidentes Trump y Bukele se rehúsan a regresarlo a su familia en los Estados Unidos. "Quiero agradecer a la familia de Kilmar por estar aquí. Quiero agradecerte, Jennifer, en particular. Y especialmente quiero agradecerte por tus lágrimas. Porque yo creo que el pueblo americano vio el dolor de tantas familias en América ahora. Tus lágrimas se reúnen con las lágrimas de muchos en mi distrito en San Diego y forman un arroyo, y a lo largo de este país forman un rio. Un rio de lágrimas por lo que está sucediendo a las familias. Supuestamente la administración Trump es la administración de los 'valores familiares,' y sin embargo están separando familias," dijo el Rep. Juan Vargas (CA-52).
"La administración Trump cometió un horripilante abuso de poder al detener a Kilmar Abrego García y deportarlo a una prisión brutal en El Salvador. Abrego García es un esposo, padre de tres, y tenía estatus protegido en los Estados Unidos," dijo la Rep. Nanette Barragán (CA-44).
"El hecho que la administración Trump lo haya deportado -- en secreto, sin causa, sin orden judicial, y sin debido proceso -- nos debería aterrar a todos. Los demócratas de la Cámara no dejarán de luchar hasta que esté sano y salvo de vuelta en los Estados Unidos, reunificado con su familia, y hasta que Donald Trump y su administración rindan cuentas por lo que hicieron," agregó.
