MEDIA ADVISORY: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Convenes Press Call with Speaker Pelosi, Leader Schumer, and Mixed-Status Families on Denial of COVID-19 Stimulus Checks
WASHINGTON— On Friday, May 1st, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus led by Chairman Joaquin Castro will convene a press call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, mixed-status family members, and an attorney with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) to discuss the importance of ensuring that all American households in financial need, including those with family members of mixed immigration status, receive COVID-19 stimulus aid.
Millions of American citizens, including children, have been discriminated against and denied stimulus checks from the federal government because they are married to an immigrant. MALDEF recently filed a federal suit on behalf of six U.S. citizens who were denied stimulus checks because they filed joint tax returns with spouses who use an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) to pay taxes.
