Congressional Hispanic Caucus Meets With President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden

July 10, 2013

Washington, D.C.: Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) released the following statement on the CHC's meeting with President Barack Obama:

"The President and Vice President met with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at a pivotal time for immigration reform and the Hispanic Community. The Senate's passage of a bipartisan bill was truly historic and today we discussed how to move immigration reform in the House.

There is no daylight between the CHC and the Administration on this issue. We share the same set of principles and understand why immigration reform is important to the American public, especially the Latino community. In our meeting we discussed the work that the CHC will engage on to push House action on immigration reform and the benefits to our economic well being. The President made clear passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill is a priority of his Administration and that he will continue to work with Democrats and Republicans to find common ground.

Additionally, the Caucus discussed the impact of the recent Supreme Court decision in Shelby County vs. Holder to all Americans, especially the rapidly growing Latino, African American and Asian communities. The President reiterated that he would work with Congress in a non-partisan way to develop legislation that will satisfy the Supreme Court and provide all Americans, equal access to the voting booth.

Lastly, the Caucus and President spoke about the importance of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to the Hispanic community. The President discussed the work the Department of Health and Human Services is doing to make sure the 10.2 million uninsured Hispanics are aware of the opportunity to gain affordable health insurance coverage. CHC Members are committed to working with the Administration to ensure that Hispanics are aware of the vast opportunities the ACA provides and that they enroll in large numbers beginning in October.
