Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Statement on ICE’s Declined Detainer Report
Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement on the announcement that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would begin publishing the "Declined Detainer Outcome Report," a report designed to shame local law enforcement agencies that decide not hold an individual beyond the point at which the person would otherwise be released from custody and to intimidate local agencies and cities with the veiled threat of losing federal funding:
"It is misguided that the Trump Administration wants to force local law enforcement agencies to do the work of federal immigration officers. Mayors and police chiefs, not a politician in Washington, D.C., should decide how local law enforcement agencies prioritize limited resources. DHS officials are issuing immigration detainers for traffic violations as innocuous as broken tail lights and speeding. In doing so they are putting in place another policy that gives license to mass deportations."
