CHC Statement on Resuming Construction of Border Wall
Washington D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán and CHC leadership issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) announcement to resume border wall construction.
“DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ recent announcement to waive several environmental and other federal laws in order to fast-track several miles of border wall construction in Texas is disappointing. While this border wall funding was signed into law by President Trump under Republican leadership, this decision is not in line with the current Administration’s commitments to end border wall construction. Republicans remain committed to building border walls that are ineffective, a poor use of taxpayer funds, and a strain on the local environment, endangering families and children who are fleeing from dangerous conditions and that seek legal asylum in the United States. There are better methods to address our immigration system in America, and we encourage the Biden Administration to pursue practical solutions. While Republicans play shutdown games, we stand ready to collaborate with the Administration to deliver positive change to our southern border.”
