Washington D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement on a report that House Republicans are planning to cut $876 million from Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief account to finance the President's border wall:
"It's disgusting and disgraceful that Republican lawmakers thought it was ok to pillage one-third of FEMA's disaster relief account and use it to build President Trump's senseless border wall. The federal disaster aid account is a critical lifeline for people recovering from catastrophes like Harvey, it is not a slush fund for ridiculous political whims. Speaker Ryan and House Republicans should be ashamed that they were willing to sell out disaster victims in order to feed the President's ego and further his anti-immigrant agenda. The very least they could do after trying to compromise our nation's ability to respond to natural disasters is to return the funds to where they belong and stop playing politics with peoples' lives."
