WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today,Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Nanette Barragán issued a statement on the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act decision in Allen v. Milligan.
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a welcome win for voting rights, our democracy, and minority communities across Alabama,” said Chair Barragan. “Racial gerrymandering has a long and terrible history in America, it has been used by lawmakers to erase minority voters’ power in order to serve their own political interest. The Supreme Court ruled today that Alabama's Republican-drawn congressional boundaries do in fact violate the Voting Rights Act by diluting the power of Black voters. America’s voters can breathe a sigh of relief today as our nation’s democracy was protected, but this decision should serve as a reminder that attacks on voting rights are not a thing of the past. It’s critical that Congress protect and strengthen voting rights by fully restoring the Voting Rights Act. The time is now.”
