CHC Chair Statement on National Minority Health Month
April 30, 2018
Washington D.C. — Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement on National Minority Health Month:
"As we mark the end of National Minority Health Month, it is vital that we recognize and address the disparities in health outcomes between all of our nation's communities and advance health justice for the families we represent. We must not allow for minority communities to continue suffering at a higher rate from preventable and deadly illnesses like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, when we know that there are smart policies and programs to help families have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy and productive lives.
"By 2044, the U.S. will be a majority-minority country and it's more critical than ever that we do everything possible to close the health gap by increasing access to mental health and healthcare services for communities of color. If we address the root causes of these disparities and improve the overall health of communities of color, then we will not only save lives but increase the quality of life and health outcomes for all of our nation's families.
"I commit to working with my Congressional colleagues to put forth legislation that builds on the successes of the Affordable Care Act by improving access to quality healthcare and services, strengthening the health workforce, building healthy communities, and improving health equity."
