CHC Chair Statement on H.R. 3697, Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act

September 14, 2017
Washington D.C. – Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement after members of the CHC voted to formally oppose H.R. 3697, the Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act:
"This legislation is an assault on the basic due process protections afforded to everyone in our nation. The bill broadly overreaches and puts Americans and immigrants at risk of being unjustly profiled. The sweeping discretion given to enforcement officials is so dangerously broad that it would classify nuns who assist undocumented immigrants as gang members. We all support efforts to make our cities and neighborhoods safer, including a crackdown on gang violence. But this legislation infringes on constitutional protections, and is irresponsible and dangerous. When our basic due process protections are eroded for anyone, they are at risk for everyone."
