CHC Chair Statement on Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15, 2017
Washington D.C. – The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement to commemorate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated each year from the 15th of September until the 15th of October:
"Every Hispanic Heritage Month, we reflect on and honor the history, culture, achievements, and perseverance of our community. Hispanic families have been fundamental in the success of the nation. Hispanic men and women are teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs and serve in the Armed Forces. Hispanic families believe in the American dream and are striving to achieve it. We recognize and cherish the unique role Hispanic Americans have played in our nation's history.
"But this Hispanic Heritage Month is different. Our community's positive contributions are being diminished and our hard-earned progress is under threat. Right now, 800,000 DREAMers, who came to this country at a young age and have done everything right, are living in uncertainty and instability.
"During this important month of action, we will continue the fight to protect these young Americans and expand opportunities for all communities across the country. Key to that is pushing Congress to pass the DREAM Act without delay. Now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to ensure that our communities have access to quality and affordable health care, education, and better paying jobs. That is how I and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will continue to honor hard-working Hispanic families, our common heritage, and the past and future contributions of the Hispanic community."
