Washington, D.C. – Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released this statement following the announcement that Congressman Luis Gutiérrez of Illinois will retire next years after 25 years in Congress:
"Congressman Luis Gutiérrez has fought tirelessly to uphold our deepest held values and been an ardent defender of immigrants, the Puerto Rican community, and hard-working Americans across this nation.
"To the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressman Gutiérrez's example and enduring legacy of principled leadership will continue to guide generations of leaders. During his career, he courageously and boldly travelled to every corner of our country to give hope to all those who believed in the promise of America. It is for that reason that Congressman Gutiérrez's impact should not be measured in words, but rather in the number of lives he's changed for the better.
"I look forward to continuing to work together with Congressman Gutiérrez as he serves out the remainder of his term. My colleagues and I will count on his passion, determination, and optimism as we fight for a solution for Dreamers before the end of this year. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the American people, and I thank Congressman Gutiérrez his 25 years of service in Congress and wish him all best as he continues to be a force for righteousness and good."
