CHC Chair Statement on No Border or Immigration Policies in Emergency Supplemental Funding Bill

November 10, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Nanette Barragán released the following statement on attaching new or modified border or immigration policies to an emergency supplemental funding bill.

“Any emergency supplemental funding bill that seeks to modify or establish new immigration and border policy or authorities will face strong opposition from members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. We have seen the extreme proposals from Republicans that would forever alter our U.S. immigration system and create serious dangers for asylum seekers and other vulnerable immigrants.

Senate Democrats should not give in to Republicans and attach border and immigration policy to critical emergency spending for our allies and humanitarian assistance for those in dire need. The inhumane and harsh policies proposed by Republicans would eliminate most asylum protections for those fleeing persecution, rape, gang violence, and death. We should not take the bait and negotiate down to some lesser but still awful policy that would do great harm to some of the most vulnerable people seeking safety and security in our country.”
