CHC Chair Statement on Death of Three Migrants near Eagle Pass, TX
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in response to reports from the Department of Homeland Security that three migrants, including two children, drowned in the Rio Grande near a park in Eagle Pass, Texas where state officials have barred Border Patrol agents from accessing the area, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairwoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) released the following statement.
“Texas Governor Greg Abbott bears full responsibility for the deaths of a migrant woman and two children who drowned on Friday night in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas,” said Chairwoman Barragán. “These deaths are on the hands of the Texas Governor and all those whose callousness led to these unnecessary and tragic deaths. Texas officials prevented Border Patrol officers from investigating a group of migrants in distress. A woman and two children died. This is one of the most immoral, repugnant, and disgusting acts of depravity that I have seen, and Governor Abbott must be held accountable for these deaths. The Texas Governor does not have the authority to take border security into his own hands and prevent federal agents from doing their job. I demand a full and thorough investigation into this incident by the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.”
