CHC CHAIR ON OBAMA’S 2013 BUDGET

February 14, 2012

Washington D.C.: Chairman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX 20) made the following statement upon the release of President Obama’s Federal Year 2013 budget.

“President Obama’s budget for 2013 shows that his priorities are aligned with the needs of the Hispanic community and the CHC will continue to be ready to work with him. President Obama and the CHC share the belief that getting Americans back to work is the first priority. Latino workers represent 15% of the workforce, so it is vital that we invest responsibly to strengthen our middle class and grow our economy.

“With over 17 million Latinos under the age 18, education is an investment our community cannot afford to ignore. President Obama understands the importance of early education and has pledged $300 million in resources to Health and Human Services Dept. to improve child care quality. The $393 million included to support programs for migrant children will ensure all American children have access to a great education.

“Currently, only 13% of Hispanics have college degrees. Simply put, this number must improve. President Obama’s proposed increase of Pell Grants to $5,635 will help Latinos fund college and they will earn a better equality education with the funds allotted for expanding programs at minority serving institutions.

“Hispanics open small businesses three times more often that the national average, so the $221 million of capital for low-income communities through Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institutions and $16 billion in SBA 7(a) loan guarantees will help businesses expand and flourish.

“By investing in the American people, the president’s 2013 budget is a step in the right direction. We look forward to working with our colleagues to strengthen an economy built to last.”
