CHC Chair Barragán Statement on Impeachment Proceedings Against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Washington, DC – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán (CA-44) released the following statement regarding the current impeachment proceedings against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by House Republicans:

“The House Republicans’ impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas is a political stunt.  Their disagreement with the policy decisions of the Biden Administration at the border is not and has never been an impeachable offense.  Several Republican Members agree that these charges do not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.  

House Republicans have turned down billions in federal funds for increased resources at the border, including more ICE detention beds and Border Patrol officers. Secretary Mayorkas has also been a key negotiator with Republicans to find solutions to the challenges at the southern border.  It is clear now Republicans only wish to play politics and not solve this critical issue for our country.  This impeachment sets a dangerous precedent and further divides the American people.”
