Washington D.C. — Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán issued a statement denouncing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s inhumane border practices.

“Disturbing. That’s the word that comes to mind as we witness the horrors occurring at the Southern Border at the hands of Texas Governor Greg Abbott,” said CHC Chair Barragán. “Governor Abbott’s shameless alleged actions are inexcusable, and there must be a full and transparent investigation into the possible crimes that he ordered to prevent further violence and mistreatment of children, asylum seekers, and migrants. America is a nation of immigrants, and throughout history, we have been a country which welcomes the vulnerable with open arms – not razor wire, physical violence, and dangerous practices. There is no rationale for how these children and families have been treated. It’s not an American way of dealing with people seeking a better life – regardless of partisan beliefs and ideology. I urge Governor Abbott to halt this tragedy now and ensure the humane and adequate treatment of migrants. The CHC stands together, and we will fight to stop this injustice.”
