CHC Chair Barragán Introduces House Resolution Commemorating the Legacy and Career of Alejandro Fernández
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), introduced a House Resolution recognizing and honoring the legacy of Alejandro “El Portillo” Fernández.
“I’m proud to introduce a resolution honoring the legacy, career, and impact of Latino music icon, Alejandro Fernandez, “said Chair Barragán. “Alejandro not only creates music that millions of people enjoy across the globe, but he’s using his platform and robust following to empower the Latino community through his artistic talents. He’s also been a strong advocate of our continued work to establish the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino on the National Mall. The CHC applauds Alejandro for his lifetime commitment to uplift Latino culture through music, and I look forward to his continued support of our efforts to serve Latinos across the country.
The resolution acknowledges Fernández’s career of over four decades and his contributions to Mexican music and Latino culture. It also recognizes Fernández as a humanitarian for the long-lasting impact he has made beyond his music worldwide. The international artist has been instrumental in uplifting and uniting the Latino community through donating his time, resources, and art.
“I believe music is a tie that binds us together. We gather to celebrate life, love, and the rich Latino culture that unites us wherever we are in the world. I’m honored that my shows are also vehicle for giving back and supporting causes that directly impact our community,” said Alejandro Fernandez. “I extend my deepest gratitude to Representative Barragán and the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for this incredible recognition.”
In 2023, Fernandez committed his support for the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino (FRIENDS), a non-profit organization advocating for the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino by pledging to donate proceeds from his ongoing “Amor y Patria” tour. He also promised to contribute some of the proceeds from his upcoming New York City-area concert to support the New York Immigration Coalition. In 2021, Fernández donated $100,000 from his “Hecho En México” tour to Families Belong Together, a non-profit organization working to end family separation and detention at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Alejandro Fernández’s impact in uplifting the U.S. Latino community is an inspiration and goes well beyond his musical talents,” saidEstuardo Rodriguez, FRIENDS President & CEO. “We are grateful to him for using his platform for good, and we are proud to stand with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to honor his achievements and incredible contributions.”
In October, FRIENDS, in collaboration with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, will host an event on Capitol Hill to recognize Fernandez and celebrate his career and contributions.
Joining Rep. Barragán in introducing today’s resolution are Representatives: Adriano Espaillat, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, and Juan Vargas.
