CHC Chair Barragán Honors Victims of Uvalde School Shooting

May 24, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, on the two-year mark of the Robb Elementary school tragedy, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Nanette Barragán honors the victims of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

“Two years ago today, America was shaken to its core as 19 innocent children, most of them Latino, and two courageous teachers, were murdered in a senseless act of gun violence in their tight-knit community. These beautiful souls went to class that day, ready to learn and teach, as summer break approached. Sadly, they never made it home for dinner.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Uvalde on this difficult day. However, the CHC knows that thoughts and prayers are not enough to end the gun violence epidemic. The only effective response to preventing senseless gun violence is through gun safety legislation, decisive action, and widespread education.

I am grateful to President Biden, who last year established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, modeled after CHC Member Rep. Maxwell Frost’s bill. This office is crucial as we work to prevent further suffering.

The CHC will not stop until every child, parent, and American can live free from the fear of gun violence. We owe it to the victims of Uvalde and all victims of gun violence, and their families, to continue this fight. We must honor their memories with meaningful change.”
