CHC Chair Barragán Applauds Biden Administration for Making TPS More Accessible for First-Time Applicants
WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Representative Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), issued the following statement after the Biden administration announced that migrants who apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and cannot afford to pay the filing or biometric service fees, may be eligible for waivers:
“I’m thankful that President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas took this step to help migrants and their families who struggle with the financial costs of our immigration process. The cost to file for TPS should not be a barrier to obtain legal status in this country. Now, applicants who cannot afford to pay the filing or biometric service fees are eligible for fee waivers that will make our TPS process more accessible for eligible migrants.
The CHC asked the President earlier this year for the TPS fee waiver and are pleased to see the President deliver on this much-needed relief for first-time TPS applicants. This was one of several Executive Action requests we sent to the President that we asked to be implemented before the end of the year. CHC Leadership looks forward to meeting with President Biden to discuss the implementation of the rest of our Executive Action list.”
In January, the 42-Member Hispanic Caucus delivered a letter to the President with a list of 20 executive and administrative actions that address critical priorities to improve the lives of the 65 million Latinos living in the United States and Puerto Rico, including several targeted recommendations to help fix our nation’s broken immigration system.
