CHC Chair Barragán and CHC Deputy Chair Espaillat Applaud Biden-Harris Administration for New Executive Actions that will Protect Americans from Gun Violence

September 27, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and CHC Deputy Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued a statement to applaud the Biden-Harris Administration’s new Executive Actions to protect Americans, including millions of Latinos, from gun violence.

“I’m thankful to the Biden-Harris Administration for their decisive actions to combat gun violence and safeguard our communities. Latino youth are disproportionately impacted by gun violence, with nearly half of Latino youth in major U.S. cities living within a mile of a gun homicide within the past year.

The impact of this violence was devastatingly illustrated just over two years ago by the Uvalde school shooting, which rocked the Latino community. That incident alone claimed the lives of 19 innocent children, most of them Latino, and two brave teachers. The El Paso shooting, which was the deadliest attack on Latinos in modern history, also rattled our core and underscored the urgent need for effective interventions.

These new Executive Actions aim to assess and mitigate the threats posed by 3D-printed and converted firearms, enhance school-based active shooter drills, and allocate $135 million to support state Red Flag laws. These actions will save lives, and as we mark the one-year anniversary of the inaugural White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris and inspired by legislation championed by CHC’s Rep. Maxwell Frost, we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with the Biden-Harris Administration to combat America’s gun violence epidemic and keep families safe.”
