The Congressional Hispanic Caucus opposes President Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts that are terrorizing immigrant families and destabilizing the American economy. The fact is that all Americans will feel the impact of mass deportations. The loss of teachers, caregivers, nurses, agricultural, construction, and essential workers and will spike inflation and prices.
As importantly, the indiscriminate approach the Trump administration has taken to immigration enforcement makes American communities less safe. Immigration experts agree: when you target everyone for deportation, you undermine efforts to focus on the most violent offenders.
The CHC unequivocally supports making our communities safe and using America’s law enforcement resources to stop and reduce crime. However, it is a horrific reality that President Trump is abusing our law enforcement resources and military assets to target hardworking immigrants. In fact, only 1 in 10 immigrants have a criminal record. The administration should focus on deporting individuals who committed violent crimes and threaten our public safety as all previous administrations have done.
Instead, the administration's policy of indiscriminate mass deportations will lead to children coming home to find their parents and grandparents gone. It will separate families. The impacts of the policy are already felt in communities around the country.
