MEDIA ADVISORY: Congressional Leaders to Hold Panel with the US Commission on Civil Rights on Federal Report regarding Trump Administration’s Inhumane Immigration Policies

December 2, 2019

Members and Commissioners will discuss report findings on how policy changes to asylum and the detention of children have created an unnecessary human and civil rights crisis at the border

WASHINGTON—– The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) and Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) will hold a Member-level panel discussion with the US Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR) on their recent reportTrauma at the Border: The Human Cost of Inhumane Immigration Policies.

Released on October 24, USCCR's Trauma at the Border: The Human Cost of Inhumane Immigration Policies details how the current Administration's changes to asylum, the detention of children, and certain other immigration policies, practices, and procedures have created an unnecessary human and civil rights crisis at the southern border. The 200-page report reveals the depths of atrocities committed against vulnerable immigrants by the Trump Administration and includes personal testimonies from asylum seekers, legal experts, and witnesses of the impacts of changing immigration policy at the US-Mexico border. The recent report has similar findings to previous government and watchdog reports, such as the September report by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Inspector General on the mental health impacts of family separation and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General July report on the overcrowding and substandard immigration detention conditions.

Selected speakers will be available for interviews immediately after the panel discussion.
