Hispanic Caucus Chairman Castro Statement on Retirement Announcement of Congressman José E. Serrano
WASHINGTON— Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement after Congressman José Serrano (NY-15) announced that he would retire at the end of his term:
"I'm saddened to hear of my friend José Serrano's decision to retire at the end of the 116th Congress. Congressman Serrano has served the public for over 50 years, including nearly 30 in the House, and his retirement will be a great loss to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, our Democratic Caucus, and our country.
"Congressman Serrano has served our nation with steadfast loyalty and tenacity through his many years of service. A faithful servant to his Bronx community, he has spent his career fighting for immigrants, Latinos, and the most vulnerable among us. He has served our country with a vision for the future, and the Hispanic Caucus is grateful for his work to protect the integrity of the 2020 Census, his leadership to create a National Smithsonian American Latino Museum and for his continued efforts to support fellow Americans in Puerto Rico.
"As Dean of the Hispanic Caucus, Serrano has served as a mentor and friend to so many within our caucus, and we all look to him for guidance and wisdom. He also blazed a trail for so many Hispanic members to follow in his footsteps – we would not be where we are today without José's leadership.
"The entire nation owes José Serrano gratitude for his service and I know that our entire Caucus will keep him in our thoughts as he faces Parkinson's with strength and determination."
