Congressional Hispanic Caucus Statement on the President and First Lady Contracting COVID-19

October 2, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, October 2nd, 2020, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) released the follow statement on the President and First Lady contracting COVID-19:

"We wish the President and First Lady a swift recovery. Hopefully, this tragedy is a wake-up call. President Trump has repeatedly spread disinformation about COVID-19, lied to the American people about the seriousness of this deadly pandemic, and downplayed the importance of basic public health measures such as wearing a mask. The President of the United States has access to the best health care in the world, yet millions of Americans—including essential workers like farmworkers and meat-packers—do not have the same resources and our country still lacks a national testing strategy.

"Over 7 million Americans have been infected and more than 200,000 have died from the coronavirus, disproportionately Latinos. This week, Dr. Fauci told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that "clearly we have an extraordinary problem" and Dr. Peter Hotez warned that we are experiencing, "the historic devastation of the Latino community." Rather than ramming through a Supreme Court nomination and trying to terminate the Affordable Care Act, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions, the Senate should immediately pass the updated Heroes Act, which was approved last night by the House to deliver relief to struggling families during this crisis."
