The meeting highlighted the deep diaspora ties between the United States and Mexico and the critical role remittances play in supporting millions of families across borders. “Remittances are a lifeline for working families in Latin America, and we must ensure they remain affordable, transparent, and secure,” said CHC Chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat. “Today’s conversation with our Mexican counterparts reinforced our shared responsibility to protect these vital flows and expand financial inclusion for our communities. Strengthening these systems is not only good economic policy—it’s a matter of justice and equity for immigrant families on both sides of the border.” The CHC remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that sending remittances is accessible, affordable, and secure. As remittance flows continue to grow through both traditional channels and new digital platforms, CHC members emphasized the importance of strengthening regulations to reduce corruption, increase transparency, and foster stronger, more equitable business environments. The Republican Budget Betrayal approved by the House of Representatives by a one-vote margin this week would tax remittances sent by non-U.S. citizens by 3.5 percent. It's a discriminatory and needlessly punitive measure, which will have a negligible impact on our federal budget while crushing working families. The bilateral dialogue marked an important step toward legislative collaboration, providing an opportunity to exchange ideas and reinforce a shared vision of financial inclusion. Protecting this economic lifeline — and advancing policies that support families and communities — will remain a top priority for the CHC.
