CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CAUCUS (CHC) MEETS WITH PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA TO DISCUSS IMMIGRATION REFORM
(Washington, DC) - Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) met with President Barack Obama who reasserted his commitment to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
“We were very encouraged to hear that the President will use his speech on Thursday, July 1, at American University to make the case for why comprehensive immigration reform is the only solution to our broken immigration system” said Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, Chairwoman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. “We stand with the President and will continue to work with him to pass a tough, fair and practical immigration reform. We expect Republicans to finally join us in supporting a real solution.”
“Our country needs a legal immigration system that works, an end to illegal immigration, a secure border, and rules that employers, immigrants and everyone else will follow. That can only be achieved through comprehensive immigration reform and there is no good reason why we cannot have comprehensive immigration reform this year” said Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Chair of the CHC Immigration Task Force.
“We have a renewed commitment from the White House, and Democratic support in the House and the Senate. What we don’t have is a single Republican willing to help us solve this problem” said Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, First Vice-Chair of the CHC. “Republicans need to show some leadership, put party politics aside, and support a comprehensive immigration reform that will fix our current system once and for all.”
