Congressional Hispanic Caucus Announces Dreamers as State of the Union Guests

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) announced that Dreamers from their districts would join them as their virtual guests for this evening's State of the Union Address. Despite the roadblocks from Senate Republicans and the Senate Parliamentarian, the CHC and Chair Raul Ruiz, M.D. will work with President Biden's Administration to exhaust all possible routes to move immigration reform forward, protect DACA and extend protections for Dreamers. Members of the CHC released the following statements:

"I am honored to have Alma, a local Dreamer from Thermal, California, join me as my virtual guest for this year's State of the Union," said Chair Dr. Ruiz. "I am incredibly proud of her in all that she has achieved and all that she is working toward. As Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, I have led efforts to secure a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers like Alma who contribute to our economy every day. Dreamers are essential members of our communities and the very health care workers, teachers, and frontline workers who have helped America survive the pandemic. For Alma and for immigrant essential workers across the country, we must pass immigration reform now with a pathway to citizenship to boost our economy for all Americans, keep families together, and Build Back Better than ever before."

"Our country has made tremendous strides this past year, yet there is more work that remains in our efforts to deliver comprehensive immigration reform. To ensure immigrants and their families remain at the forefront of our nation's discussion, I have invited Yosselin Alvarez as my virtual guest for this year's State of the Union Address. As we continue to highlight the significant contributions of millions of immigrants who contribute to the success of their community and our nation as a whole – I am proud to honor Yosselin and share her story with millions of others who like her are DACA recipients, future leaders, and making a difference in their communities around the nation. Immigrants and Dreamers, like Yosselin are vital to our nation's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have a duty to keep the legacy of our nation of immigrants alive by delivering a comprehensive reform that will make that dream a reality," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

"I am very proud to join my Hispanic Caucus colleagues in highlighting one of the millions of immigrants who contributes to the success of their community and our nation as a whole," said Rep. Grace Napolitano. "Carmen is a courageous Dreamer who embodies the very best of our American ideals. She, like so many Dreamers who have had to endure much uncertainty surrounding the DACA program, deserves permanent protection and peace of mind. We must finally do the right thing for Dreamers and their families."

"I'm proud to honor Jackie Olivares as my virtual guest for President Biden's first State of the Union address," said Rep. Juan Vargas. "A Dreamer from California's 51st District and a former intern in my office, Jackie has attended San Diego State University and the University of San Diego studying political science, international relations, and women's studies. She is passionate about working in her community. On the first day of Women's History Month, I'm pleased to recognize Jackie's accomplishments as a Latina in my district and commend her for her dedication to other young Latinas in San Diego."

"Our Dreamers contribute to our great nation. Karla Segundo is one of my constituents who continues to use her time and voice to push for members in our community to do their civic duty and vote. She is a future law student who wants to become an immigration and criminal justice attorney. Our immigrant community has been here for us and I will continue to be here for them," said Rep. Lou Correa.

WASHINGTON, D.C.

"Nuestros Dreamers contribuyen a nuestra gran nación.
