CHC Statement on Trump Administration Proposal to Slash Refugee Admissions to Zero

July 19, 2019

WASHINGTONCongressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump Administration is looking to limit the number of refugees admitted to the United States to zero:

"For decades, Democrats and Republicans alike have stood by our commitment to our international community and have welcomed refugees. However, since the start of this Administration, there has been an alarming shift to accept fewer and fewer refugees to the point that now this Administration is looking to slash refugee admissions to zero next year. Refugees are the most in need and most vulnerable, these are families and children who have suffered untold violence and persecution.

"Closing the door on refugees directly contradicts America's tradition of welcoming people from other countries and runs counter to our most basic values. We must continue to stand by those of faith and those who believe in our common humanity. We have a moral obligation to speak in one voice and demand that our country does not turn its back on the suffering of thousands."
