CHC Statement on the Passage of the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6

June 4, 2019

WASHINGTONCongressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement on the passage of the Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6:

"The most powerful movements in American history started with young people. In 2006, thousands of young Dreamers took to the streets - in Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago – to demand change and ask that their government acknowledge them as fully American. This is the culmination of their work. I want to thank the Dreamers, the groups, and advocates for their hard work that has brought today's victory, as well as the bill authors, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, and Congresswoman Yvette Clark, for their fearless leadership. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has been working to pass permanent protections for Dreamers for years – we passed it in the House in 2010 and will keep fighting until the Dream and Promise Act is signed into law.

"This was a bipartisan victory; our Democratic Caucus stood unanimous and was joined by seven Republicans who know the value of Dreamers, TPS, and DED recipients. But we're not done yet. We must do everything we can to push Senator Mitch McConnell, the Senate, and the President to take action. We must keep fighting, but today we celebrate the hard work of Dreamers, their families, and all the advocates."
